Why doesn’t my business show up in ChatGPT?

The short answer: AI does not know you exist. It is not ranking you twelfth — it has nothing solid enough about you to say your name out loud. Here are the four reasons that happens, and what each one takes to fix.

01

AI gets confused about who you are

Your name, phone number, hours or address disagree across Google, Bing, Foursquare, Yelp and a dozen directories. An assistant that cannot reconcile two versions of you will not stake a recommendation on either — it names the business whose details line up everywhere.

02

There is nothing for AI to reference

Assistants quote sources. If no article, list or review body has anything to say about your work, there is nothing to quote. In one study of local businesses, those with third-party coverage were cited 5.9× more often — and eleven of the businesses tested were never mentioned by AI at all.

03

You are missing from the lists AI checks

Before naming anyone, assistants look at “best of” round-ups, local directories and review sites. Those lists are written by people you can actually reach. If you are not on them, you are not in the answer.

04

Your reviews are stale or sparse

Volume matters, but recency matters more. Businesses AI names carry roughly 12× the reviews of the ones it skips, and reviews older than about 90 days stop pulling their weight. A wall of five-star reviews from 2022 reads, to an assistant, like a business that may not be trading any more.

The numbers behind it

45% of consumers now ask an AI assistant when they need a local service — up from about 6% a year earlier. Only 1.2% of local businesses ever get named in those answers. So almost half your potential customers are asking a machine who to call, and for most businesses the machine has never heard of them.

Why your current marketing is not fixing it

Ads buy attention while the card is being charged. SEO earns position in a list of links that fewer people read. Neither gives an assistant a reason to name you, because assistants do not read ad auctions or rankings — they read reviews, lists, mentions and your own pages. That is a different job, and it is the one nobody has been doing for you.

The good news

There is a real window open right now. Almost nobody in your trade is working on this, so the bar for becoming the recommended business in your area is far lower than it will be in two years. The work is unglamorous and monthly — which is exactly why most of your competitors will not do it.
