What is the difference between SEO and AI optimization?
One sentence: SEO makes Google rank your website. GEO makes AI say your name. They run on different signals, they are measured differently, and doing one well does almost nothing for the other.
- Gets your website ranked in Google results
- Customer sees a list of ten blue links
- Customer picks from the list themselves
- Built on keywords, backlinks, page speed
- You compete for position 1—10 on page one
- Measured in rankings and clicks
- Gets AI to recommend your business by name
- Customer gets two or three specific names
- AI picks for the customer
- Built on reviews, lists, content, mentions
- You are either named or you do not exist
- Measured in how often you get recommended
Why your SEO is not helping with AI
Because the things an SEO invoice lists have near-zero correlation with getting named:
- Page speed and load time — an assistant never visits your site to time it
- Core Web Vitals — Google cares, assistants do not look
- Schema markup alone — useful for Google snippets, largely invisible here
- llms.txt files — despite the hype, no measurable effect on recommendations
- Meta descriptions and title tags — written for a results page nobody is reading
- Internal linking — helps Google crawl, does not affect recommendations
- Image alt text — good practice, not a recommendation signal
What does work is a different list entirely:
- Review volume and freshness across several platforms
- “Best of” list mentions in your area
- Depth of problem-specific content — the questions people actually ask
- Identical information on every site that carries your details
- Third-party validation — other publications mentioning you
- Content freshness — published recently, not a site last touched in 2021
- Presence on Bing, Foursquare and Yelp, not Google alone
Do you still need SEO?
Yes. Roughly half your customers still type into Google, and dropping that channel means losing them. Keep your SEO company doing what they do; we handle the AI side. Some of the work overlaps — reviews and content help both — but the strategies and the maintenance are different.
The bottom line
SEO means people who type into Google can find your website. GEO means people who ask an assistant get told your name. In 2026 the second group is 45% of your market and growing, and almost nobody in your trade is working on it.
Is AI recommending you, or your competitor?
Free test, run by hand across all four assistants. Tell us your business name, your city and where to send the sheet.
Free. No card, no signup, nothing to sign. A person runs the prompts by hand — not a script — and the sheet comes back within two business days. No call unless you ask for one.
